Multi-Touch Interface Research

My company “Strukt” brought its multitouch table, called “Struktable” to the 2009 TOCA ME design conference in Munich. People were invited to play around with 5 simple demo applications the entire evening. We gathered a lot of responses and are already working on implementing the feedback in our next applications.

The software used to write the apps is VVVV (vvvv.org). The hardware we developed over the past months with the help of Ben Albrecht, Alex Dejaco and Johann Wegscheider. Also a big shout out to Thomas Pintaric for his great work on the blob detection.

We just can’t get enough of this wonderful stuff. After work hours Andreas played around with a VVVV patch Thomas started and somehow found back to his roots as a VJ working with realtime generated graphics. He used the multitouch interface as an input device to draw lively shapes in all kind of colors on the surface. The number of inputs was translated into data to define the visual output. We basically were just messing around.

Wir können einfach nicht genug davon bekommen. Nach der regulären Arbeitszeit hat Andreas letztens ein VVVV patch von Thomas bearbeitet und wieder zu seinen Wurzeln als VJ gefunden. Er hat das multitouch interface verwendet um lebendige Formen in allen möglichen Farben zu generieren. Die Anzahl der Eingaben wurde in Daten übersetzt, die letztendlich das Aussehen der Bilder bestimmt hat. Aber eigentlich haben wir uns nur herumgespielt.

It’s been a while that I was able to post about some progress on Strukt work, just because everything was kinda “in progress” but didn’t reach a milestone yet. But I’m happy to announce that our multitouch table prototype is now officially up and running. The screen, projector, mirror and camera is adjusted, a very basic, but stable frame built and Thomas already wrote the first applications to be tested on this home made beauty. We are all excited and eager to play with it.

Es ist schon einige Zeit her, dass ich über ein paar Projektfortschritte bei Strukt schreiben konnte. Das liegt aber auch vorwiegend daran, dass an einigem gearbeitet wird, aber bis jetzt diese Projekte noch nicht abgeschlossen wurden. Aber zumindest unser Multitouch Tisch Prototyp ist jetzt endlich herzeigbar. Der Bildschirm, Beamer, Spiegel und die Kamera sind adjustiert, ein zwar simpler, aber stabiler Rahmen gebaut und Thomas hat bereits ein paar kleine Programme geschrieben, mit denen wir die Funktionalität testen können. Wir sind natürlich recht glücklich damit und motiviert, damit herumzuspielen.

And finally, it all works and Andreas is very happy (and yes, his head is recognized as an input aswell, gotta use your brain sometimes, you know)

Yesterday we got a brand new short range projector delivered to build it into our multi-touch table. That baby literally was just released to the market the day we got it, and we are really happy with the results. Andreas also did the first alignment tests and while it will be quite some more time passing until we got the perfect camera and software settings, the actual multi-touch-detection works pretty well. We love sending the green dots all over the screen, tied to our fingertips.

Gestern kam endlich unser brandneuer Kurzdistanz-Beamer ins Büro und wurde sogleich in unseren Multitouch Tisch verbaut. Dieses feine Gerät ist tatsächlich erst seit gestern im Handel erhältlich und wir sind recht glücklich über die Leistung bis jetzt. Andreas hat auch die ersten Ausrichtungstests durchgeführt und obwohl es sicher noch einige Zeit dauern wird, bis wir die perfekten Kamera- und Softwareeinstellungen herausgefunden haben, funktioniert die allgemeine Erkennung der Berührungen recht gut. Wir lieben es regelrecht die grünen Punkte, welche so schön an unseren Fingerspitzen haften, über den Tisch zu jagen.

As our multitouch table project at Strukt grows there’s more and more crafty action going on in our office. Today we applied a silicone layer to the acrylic glass plate to improve the touchsensibility of the surface. But through the last days there was also a lot of drilling and soldering and a total of 198 LEDs put into our frame as well. Also the demo application is already done, the new wideangle lens for the camera arrived to day and the new projector is about to be delivered. So over the next days there are definitely more updates on the way.

Unser Multitouch Projekt bei Strukt wächst und gedeiht und mit einher geht ein reges handwerkliches Schaffen im Büro. Heute haben wir eine Silikonschicht auf die Acrylplatte aufgetragen um die Berührungsempfindlichkeit zu steigern. Aber auch während der letzten Tage wurde fleißig gebohrt, gelötet und insgesamt 198 LEDs verbaut. Außerdem wurde die Demoapplikation fertiggestellt, das neue Weitwinkelobjektiv für die Kamera geliefert und auch der neue Beamer ist bald zu erwarten. Also die nächsten Tage wird sicher viel weitergehen, somit auch mehr Updates kommen.

At Strukt, my new workplace, we not only work on (motion) graphics for events or exhibitions, we also develop interactive applications and sometimes even the hardware for it. Our latest project is to build a multitouch table. But that’s just one thing, since we will also write the software and develop applications for it. It’s funny to hear a drill and other construction noise in exchange to keyboard clicks once in a while. Stay tuned for updates on this project.

Wir bei Strukt, meine neue Firma, machen nicht nur Animationen und Grafiken für diverse Events oder Ausstellungen, wir entwickeln auch interaktive Anwendungen und manchmal sogar die dazugehörige Hardware. Unser aktuellstes Projekt ist der Bau eines Multitouch Tischs. Aber damit nicht genug werden wir natürlich auch die Software dafür schreiben und einzelne Programme dafür entwickeln. Es ist recht erfrischend mal nicht nur Tastaturanschläge zu hören sondern hin und wieder eine Bohrmaschine und anderen Handwerkslärm zu hören. Also, dranbleiben, hier werden in Zukunft noch mehr Berichte über dieses Projekt veröffentlicht.
